The Fitzgerald Region was successfully reinstated in the world Biosphere Network on the 28 March 2018.

The Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve includes over 40 species recognised across the state as being threatened, with more than 30 already listed by the Commonwealth.

The Fitzgerald Biosphere Community Collective comprises representation from a number of local governments and community groups, including the Ravensthorpe Agricultural Initiative Network Inc, the Shire of Ravensthorpe, Fitzgerald Biosphere Group Inc, the Shire of Jerramungup, the Friends of the Fitzgerald River National Park, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Great Southern Development Commission, Fitzgerald Coast Tourism Association, Regional Development Australia: Great Southern, South Coast Natural Resource Management, Noongar representatives and local community individuals.

These bodies work together to manage, market and increase the capacity of the region to make the most of opportunities offered by the biosphere.
